Mindsets

A mindset is the lens you use to evaluate a situation. It determines the questions you ask and the priority structure for weighing alternatives. These are the questions I ask myself to ensure I prioritize the outcomes I want to achieve.

Social Impact

Does this affect my community and if so, how?

How will other people remember or view this?

Do my actions negatively affect those near, me as well as, those around the world?

Diversity & Inclusion

Am I limited to my own beliefs and the beliefs around me?

Am I holding all my employees accountable and shifting the cultural beliefs that define the organization?

Am I encouraging a workforce that celebrates cultural diversity?

Entrepreneurial

Am I doing something new and different?

Can I learn from others similar experiences?

What can I do to exceed the wants and needs surrounding me?

Global

Do I have an open mind and culturally aware of other people's beliefs?

Am I helping employees and management work together to build a better organization?

Ethical

Does my decision have any conflict with core ethical decisions?

How will my decision affect others?

Would my grandma be proud of me for this decision?

Analytical

How am I making these decisions?

Am I weighing the pros and cons before choosing?

What is happening and how can I solve this problem?

Systems Thinking

Does this fit in to the company's goals and long term achievement plan.

Who else is affected by these decisions?

What are the systematic consequences to my decisions?

Competencies

Mays Business School identified seven behavioral competencies that it encourages students to use for success in business and in life. The competencies are communication, leading, managing, acting ethically, working with others, creating opportunity, and problem solving. These are my descriptions for each competency.

COMMUNICATION

Communication is the sharing of information and ideas between people within an enterprise. Effective communication can lead to a good working relationship between coworkers, which is necessary when attempting to be successful. Employers seek out individuals who have strong communication skills such as writing, speaking, and one-on-one conversations.

Effectively communicating your point across can mean the difference between getting a deal or not.  Good communication can help build a solid working relationship between others, which in turn can lead to improvements in morale and efficiency. Communication is the core of every business.

LEADING

Leadership in business is the ability of a company to unite and achieve common goals while building camaraderie. Leaders must utilize their intuition and decisive measures in order to guide others during difficult times. They must instill trust upon others and inspire them to perform at their highest level.

Leaders have the responsibility of inspiring everyone to be successful in every action they take. Good leaders set an example of what ought to be done through their good character, humility and exceptional examples.

MANAGING

Managing is a very important ability in the business world. Business management is the effectiveness of organizing people to achieve the desired goals of a company. Business managers need to be adept in organizing, planning, and directing others. They help employees keep track of the company's goals and stay on task.

Good business managers have many of the seven core competencies running through their veins. They are able to make use of their resources, coordinate events, and reinstate prevalent goals to lead all employees to be successful.

ACTING ETHICALLY

Ethics are the moral principles that guide any individual or company decide  to perform actions. All personnel in the business world must maintain their character and integrity by acting ethically. Ethics of business include appropriate business policies and practices regarding possible controversial subjects.

Typically, everyone has a set standard of values for how they go about their life. Each individual has their own ethical mindset, deciding between what is right and just and what is not. Codes of conduct are important in businesses to maintain a set standard to ensure that the work force and company is acting true and just.

WORKING WITH OTHERS

Working with others is momentous in the business world. It is the ability to effectively cooperate, collaborate, and manage conflicts with other people. Working with others involves listening and respecting others opinions, even if you have opposing views. This is an essential part of business.

Whether collaborating with a coworker or customer it is important to be respectful. Teamwork is a very valuable asset when used correctly. With many individuals contributing, you can come up with a wide variety of new ideas. It is important to rely on others when working in a group or team.

CREATING OPPORTUNITIES

Creating new opportunities for organizational or personal reasons forges growth. Diversity and innovation shape ingenuity which is fundamental to growing or bettering a business. It is critical to have employees who are able to take advantage of different thought processes to come up with new solutions.

Whether you're developing new software, created a new patent, or are working for NASA, disruptive innovation creates opportunities in not only the business world but the whole world. Constructing new ideas initiates a domino effect of more and more ideas coming to life. Creating opportunities have the ability to set your company apart from its competitors.

PROBLEM SOLVING

Problem solving is a unique aspect of business. Problem solving is the process of working through details of a problem to reach a solution First, an individual must understand the problem and how it happened. Then, the individual must try and find the solution to fix the problem. In a business, having people who can not only create new ideas but also solve problems is imperative

Problem solving can include anything from mathematical terms to logical operations. One must fully inspect the problem to find the solution. Employers look for individuals who have good problem solving skills. Problem solving can either make or break a company.
