I began playing basketball in the 5th grade. Since then, I played with and against many people. My high school teammates and I quickly turned into a family who always supported one another on the court and off. I was good at getting my point across and uplifting the team so I consistently fell into the captain roll every season. Basketball was challenging both mentally and physically; however, I learned that you can always do more and be better. Additionally, there will always be someone working harder than you. I also learned that everyone is unique and have different techniques/ approaches to specific circumstances. Because I was the captain, I was in charge of bringing the team together in order to succeed. Winning was fun but that wasn't the point of leading a team. Leading others is helping them grow individually and as a group for the betterment of the team and individuals themselves. Even if that meant losing, if the team gave it their all and we worked together, that was a win in my book. Throughout my many years of playing basketball there were two lessons that were most profound. The first lesson being self-discipline and growth. In any life circumstance, you have to be disciplined to put your goals first and at the same time be open to growth. The second lesson was you can always do more. Whether as a leader or contributing to the team, you can always put in more effort. Leading my teammates throughout the years significantly helped me strengthen my leadership skills. Today I am comfortable and confident when leading a group of people in any situation.
